Traffic Advisory: Lane Closure on West Bank Street for Bridge Repair Project
As part of the bridge and tunnel repair project over Brickhouse Run Stream, the eastbound lane in the 100 block of West Bank Street (between Sycamore and Market Streets) will be closed to traffic starting Saturday, September 6, at 8:00 am. Cars will be limited to a single center lane, with no truck traffic or parking allowed in the area. A few spaces will be available for short-term unloading only. Residents of West Bank Street, from the bridge area to Sycamore Street, are asked to place their trash cans behind the Exchange Building. Please note that parking on city-owned property behind the Exchange Building will not be permitted.
This road closure is necessary due to ongoing flooding, which has caused significant damage to the Brickhouse Run Tunnel. The City is working with engineers to design a new, more resilient tunnel and roadway. This major infrastructure project, supported by over $7 million in grant funding from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), will include essential repairs and upgrades and is expected to take months to complete.
Detour signs will be installed to help guide traffic during this time, and center roadway lines will also be added. The City thanks residents, businesses, and commuters for their patience and cooperation as we work to complete this essential infrastructure project.
