Brian E. Sturdivant

Brian Sturdivant was appointed Executive Deputy Fire Chief of the City of Petersburg, VA on May 15, 2017 after originally joining the organization in July of 2014. Chief Sturdivant’s experience spans more than 30 years. He has served as a line firefighter, engineer, company officer, command officer, and fire chief of a department in Northern California.
Chief Sturdivant’s educational accomplishments include a Master of Arts Degree in Security Studies from the Center for Homeland Defense & Security at the Naval Postgraduate School, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety Administration from Grand Canyon University and an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Shorter University. Sturdivant received the Certified Public Manager (CPM) designation from Arizona State University and completed the prestigious Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at Harvard University. Sturdivant has also obtained the Chief Fire Officer Designation (CFOD) bestowed by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

Sturdivant is an adjunct instructor at the Dillard University Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute and an instructor with the Gulf States Regional Center for Public Safety Innovations. As an active member of the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC), Sturdivant has served on the Terrorism and Homeland Security Committee, as a representative of the FEMA Regional “Go Teams”, and as a Mentor within the Company Officer Mentor Program.
