[ARCHIVED] City of Petersburg Parks and Leisure Services Award Nearly 600 Participants in Annual Summer Program

Petersburg, Va. – City Manager William E. Johnson, III joined Deputy City Manager, Irvin Carter and Parks and Leisure Services Director, Tami Yerby today for the Petersburg Parks and Leisure Services 2014 Awards Ceremony at Good Shepherd Baptist Church. Nearly 600 area children participated in this year’s summer program, themed “Fun and Fitness”.

“I would like to thank all of the youth for participating in this year’s program,” said William E. Johnson, III. “The annual summer program hosted by Parks and Leisure Services is a prime example of the many youth activities the city provides for area youth to gain valuable experience and engage in fun and learning opportunities.”

This year’s theme was “Fun and Fitness” featuring activities like tennis, golf, fishing, dance, gardening, nutrition, dance and more.

Director Tami Yerby states, "Community partners and a great team of employees are the key to a successful summer program. The ability to provide a vast spectrum of programs and activities, transportation and meals while school is closed is a true indication that the City of Petersburg is dedicated to improving the quality of life for youth.”

Parks and Leisure Services partnered with American Family Fitness, Good Shepherd Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Faith and Hope Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg Public Schools, Petersburg Area Art League, Petersburg Sheriff's Office, Petersburg Kiwanis, Virginia State University, Petersburg Health Department, Petersburg 4-H and Friends helping Friends, Inc.
