Petersburg City Assessor’s Office launches Field Inspection Program

Petersburg, Virginia:  The City Assessor’s Office of Petersburg has begun what will be an on-going field inspection program to include re-measuring, re-photographing and reviewing property characteristics of the City’s 14,232 real estate parcels.

“This project is crucial for accurate real estate sales analysis and precise reassessment proposals to be made in the future,” said Petersburg City Assessor, Brian Gordineer.

The International Association of Assessing Officers calls for a physical review, including an on-site verification of property characteristics, to be conducted every four to six years.  This professional standard will require the City Assessor’s Office appraisal team to visit three thousand parcels in the City of Petersburg each year.

The City’s real estate appraisers drive City vehicles marked with the City seal.  When possible, they will park in front of the property they are visiting.  They will announce their arrival to property owners by knocking at the front door, showing their City photo identification and explaining that the City Assessor’s Office is updating records.  In the event that a property owner is not home, the real estate appraiser will take the necessary measurements and leave a note if they require additional information.  Interior inspections are not part of this program and the real estate appraisers will not ask to go inside homes.

Select property information is publicly available by going to the City’s website HERE and selecting “City-Wide GIS/Mapping.”

Property owners are encouraged to contact the City Assessor’s Office at 804-733-2333 if they believe the information displayed about their property is inaccurate.  A multi-departmental effort is currently underway to display additional property information on the “City-Wide GIS/Mapping” website, as well as having the information updated on a more frequent schedule.
