[ARCHIVED] City of Petersburg Announces New Information Technology Director

Petersburg City Manager William E. Johnson, III today announced the hiring of Gerrit VanVoorhees as the City’s Information Technology Director. VanVoorhees will begin his new position on Monday, August 3.

“The City is excited about the new direction of our Information Technology department,” comments Johnson. “With VanVoorhees experience, history of collaboration and innovation, he will be an asset to our city as we look for new ways to work with more efficient and effective technology.”

VanVoorhees has over fifteen years of technical and management experience in local government having worked in the public schools systems in King William County with a population of 2200 students and 300 staff; and Cumberland County with a population of 900 students and 150 staff. In each capacity he served as the Director of Technology, overseeing the overall management of the technology department staff and the design and installation of the school systems technology and infrastructure systems. VanVoorhees brings a wealth of technical knowledge and leadership capacity to the City of Petersburg having also worked as an independent contractor designing, installing and managing networks for medium size companies and also working in private industry as a Technical Manager. VanVoorhees has supervised both contract employees and regular county employees and has managed a $1.2 million departmental budget that included both hardware and software products.

VanVoorhees has a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics from Virginia Commonwealth University.
