[ARCHIVED] Petersburg Hosts Survivor Day Event to Offer Emergency Preparedness Training for Residents

On Saturday, June 13, the City of Petersburg will host Survivor Day in collaboration with the Central Virginia Emergency Management Alliance (CVEMA). Residents will be able to learn how to prepare for disasters and learn from emergency professionals on the best ways to prepare for emergency situations.

The Petersburg Survivor Day event will be held at the Petersburg Fire/Training Division located at 1151 Fort Bross Drive Petersburg, VA 23805. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. and training will begin at 9 a.m. until noon. Interested residents should register online at www.SurvivorDay.com or call (804) 323-2033 or dial 2-1-1. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Registered attendees who complete the training will receive a free backpack with survivor kit supplies (limit one per household).

Emergencies and disasters are a part of life in Central Virginia, which is vulnerable to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, winter storms, and other hazards. Survivor Day attendees will learn how to survive in their home without power for at least 72 hours and what to take with them should they need to leave their homes in a hurry.

Survivor Day is presented by CVEMA with funding from the US Department of Homeland Security. CVEMA is a collaboration of local emergency managers and partner organizations from 25 localities in Central Virginia who voluntarily partnered together after federal funding of the Central Virginia Urban Area Security Initiative ended. Planning and basic staffing services for CVEMA are provided by the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission.
