RiverFest 2019 – Find LOVE on the Appomattox River Trail

Great family event that will put you on the Appomattox River Trail, or you can kayak, or fish. If you have never done any of that, you will have the opportunity here.  There will be live music, a rock climbing wall, nature exhibits, reptile/insect exhibits, obstacle course, archaeological demonstrations, Food vendors.  Park just across the river in Matoaca and shuttles will bring you in.  Requests $5 donation.  10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.



April 28 

Concert of LOVE on the Appomattox – featuring Flashback playing music from 1969.

Bring a chair or blanket, even pack a picnic, and listen to great music on the beautiful lawn at

Weston Plantation in Hopewell.  Come by car or boat – the band’s stage is right beside the river.  5:00 PM.  FREE

Weston hosts free Sounds of Summer on the Appomattox each Sunday in May and the first 2       Sundays in June with a different band each week – 5:00 PM.  www.historichopewell.org.  The

Shop, All Manor of Things, will be open and you may want to come early and tour the house.

April 30:

LOVE 300 Years of History on Petersburg Garden Tour - From Grove Avenue, the oldest street in Petersburg to homes around Poplar Lawn Park to the “new suburb”, Walnut Hill, and

including an urban garden on Market Street.   Tea will be served in a beautiful garden on High Street.  Tickets on the day of the tour will only be available in the Petersburg Visitor Center, 15

West Bank Street in the heart of Old Towne, so leave some time for shopping and dining.

May 10 – Find What You LOVE at Friday for the Arts in Old Towne Petersburg 

It might be beautiful art in the galleries, music on the restaurant patios, special dishes in the restaurants, a precious antique or collectible in a shop, a great beer at one of the breweries.  Maybe you will find the perfect Mother’s Day gift.  It will all be part of Friday for the Arts, when the shops, galleries and restaurants are open later.  Remember, we’re celebrating LOVE and the Virginia is for Lovers 50th birthday throughout Old Towne Petersburg.  5:30 PM – ‘til.

June 8 – Arias & Duets of LOVE at Historic Battersea 

Virginia Opera will be presenting music from favorite operas and Broadway shows on the beautiful rolling lawn of Historic Battersea.  This year they will be featuring music from shows that were on Broadway in 1969, to celebrate the 50th birthday of Virginia is for Lovers. This event is FREE.  Gates open at 5:00 PM for patrons to enjoy the lawn, so bring a chair or blanket and maybe a picnic.  It is a very family-friendly event.  There will be a Food Truck on site and beer, wine & sodas will be available.  You may pre-order boxed small plates at www.batterseafound.org. 50 Years of Love Exhibit at Prince George County Regional Heritage Center

As Virginia celebrates the 50th year of Virginia is for Lovers, the Heritage Center celebrates the Prince George County couples who have literally lived it.  This special tribute exhibit is comprised of loaned photos, memorabilia, wedding attire, from 50 years or more.  This year also celebrates the Heritage Center’s 10th anniversary, so this is an exhibit to me celebrated and not to be missed!

Special Exhibit at Keystone Truck & Tractor Museum – Wait until you see the 1969 RV that is on display – it is in perfect condition and those campers in 1969 were traveling in luxury!  It is gorgeous!.  AND, do not forget to take a photo in front of the museum’s unique LOVE sign and share it will all of your friends!  It all started with a little boy in rural Southside Virginia who fell in LOVE with his uncle’s farm tractor.  Now this museum houses hundreds of vintage tractors, trucks, cars in perfect condition, plus an amazing collection of memorabilia from country stores, gas station signs, vintage toys and more.  There is a BBQ restaurant inside too!

During the 50 Days of LOVE, the Dixie Restaurant will offer on its menu a new addition, Sloppy LOVE on a Bun (sloppy joes), which went mainstream in 1969.  The Dixie has been in Petersburg since 1939 and was operating and serving guests in 1969.

Swift Creek Mill Theatre

During the 50 Days of LOVE, Swift Creek Mill will be spearheading a Facebook effort to reach out and find those special, poignant LOVE stories from throughout The Best PART of Virginia.  Maybe they are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year, or maybe they met while one or both were stationed at Fort Lee.  Each person who submits their story will receive a reduced price ticket to be used at Swift Creek Mill Theatre through mid July.  Two couples will be selected to enjoy a wonderful date night of dinner with champagne and the current musical Bright Star at the Mill on May 11th.
