Garbage & Recycling

Collection Guidelines:

The City of Petersburg is serviced by Meridian Waste for trash pick-up and by CVWMA for recycling. 

• Trash and recycling must be at the curb by 7:00 am on the scheduled collection day. Collection hours are 7 am to 7 pm
• Collection Day for Trash varies throughout the city, to find out your collection day, visit: https://www.meridianwaste.com/guidelines/meridian-waste-petersburg-hauling/city-of-petersburg-virginia/
• Recycling collection is every other week. Enter your address in the Customer Portal at CVWMA.com to look up your collection day.
• Cart(s) should have handles facing the house with front of cart facing the street
• Container should be 5 feet from any car or mailbox and at least 2 feet of space between multiple containers.
• Place extra trash in tied trash bags next to the cart for collection. No loose trash. Do not place trash on top of cart. Only trash in crimson cart and tied trash bags beside a crimson cart will be collected. Extra trash in personal trash cans will not be collected. If you have additional trash bags outside of your trash can that need to be picked up, please call Meridian Waste at 804-748-8324. They will put in a work order for workers to pick up the additional trash. 
• Motor oil, anti-freeze, and hazardous wastes will not be accepted.
• Do not over load cart. (200 lb. limit).Construction waste (such as lumber, wire, sheetrock, concrete, etc.) generated during construction, remodeling or repair of pavement, house or other structure are not accepted.
• Place only these items in your recycling cart:

  o Aluminum and steel cans

  o Paper such as office paper, junk mail, newspapers and magazines

  o Flattened cardboard boxes

  o Kitchen, laundry and bathroom plastic bottles and containers

  o Food and beverage cartons such as soup, milk and creamer

  o Glass bottles and jars

  o Food waste contaminates! Always empty and rinse recyclables.
